Genevieve Tomajko Obituary

Genevieve Veronica (Brais) Tomajko, 100, of Irwin, died at her home, Sunday, March 10, 2024, with her son by her side. She was born October 19, 1923, in Penn, PA, and was the daughter of the late Anthony J. and Veronica (Astrauskas) Brais of Penn.

Genevieve attended Jeannette High School (Class of 1941), then entered St. John Nursing School in Pittsburgh, graduating as a registered nurse in 1944. She then enlisted in the Army Nurse Corps (ANC) and received basic training in VA. She traveled by ship through the Panama Canal and began serving her country in several hospitals in Germany (Stuttgart). She returned to the U.S. on a ship carrying “war brides and babies,” taking care of them as they came to a new country after the war.  She was honorably discharged as a first lieutenant in 1947. She then worked as an RN for Dr. Albert Jablonsky in Jeannette until she married John in 1956. She was previously a member of St. Boniface Church, Penn, and currently a member of Immaculate Conception, Irwin. She was a member of the Christian Mothers at St. Boniface. She was an avid newspaper reader keeping up with daily life in western PA. She also was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and great baker who always had time to make her special desserts and cookies for family and friends. She traveled with her husband throughout the 70s, 80s, and 90s to places like Canada, MI, TN, TX, and IN showing her love of travel always remained.

Genevieve is survived by her son Paul, of Irwin, PA; her daughter Janet and son-in-law, Eric Branyan of Keller, TX; and daughter, Susanne, son-in-law, Guy, and grandson Christopher Seydel of Munster, IN; plus, many nieces, nephews, cousins, and special loving relatives. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband John Tomajko, son Daniel, sister Aniellea (Semega), and brothers Charles, Anthony, and Joseph Brais.
