John L. "Jack" "Smitty" Smith 72 of Greensburg (Hempfield Township) passed away Monday April 17, 2017 in UPMC Mercy after a long struggle with COPD.  He was born February 25, 1945 in Jeannette a son of the late Leonard and Martha (Kidd) Smith.  In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a sister Patricia A. Smith.  He is survived by his two children, daughter Carrie L. (Thomas) Gamber of Hempfield Township and son Gregory A. (Becky) Smith of Midlothian, VA, siblings Phyllis Williams of Jeannette and Jane (Gary) Baginski of Jeannette, his first ex-wife Nancy Smith of Salem Township, his second ex-wife Shirley Smith of Scottdale, four grandchildren Joseph T. and Adam C. Gamber, Andrew J. and Marina P. Smith and many nieces, nephews and cousins.  John graduated from Jeannette High School Class of 1963.  He is retired from ABB in South Greensburg.  He was a lifelong member and trustee at Gethsemane United Methodist Church, Jeannette.  He belonged to several social clubs:  Italian American Club in Export, Export Moose, White Valley Athletic Club and was the President of Valley Hunting Camp in Keating, PA.  John enjoyed hunting and fishing most of his life and especially with his son Greg.  He loved his family and was very proud of his children and grandchildren.  The family would like to thank UPMC Mercy Intensive Care Unit for the wonderful care John received.  He will be missed by his family, extended family and his many friends.  Friends will be received Thursday April 20 in the Mason-Gelder Funeral Home Inc. 201 N. First St. Jeannette from 3 PM till 7 PM.  A memorial service will be held Saturday April 29, 2017 in Gethsemane United Methodist Church 213 N.
