Edward Sylvester Shutt passed away in his sleep on December 19, 2020, after several months of declining health. He was born January 8, 1924, in Greensburg, PA. He was raised on a dairy farm north of Greensburg and graduated from Greensburg High School in 1942. After high school he joined the Navy during World War II, serving in bases in Australia and the Philippines from 1943 to 1946. After the war, he married Mary Catherine Geiger and started a family next to his parents’ farm. He was a lifelong member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Greensburg, often serving as an usher. He worked for the Pennsylvania Railroad and Conrail for 44 years before retiring. He and his wife moved to DuBois, PA, after retirement then moved back to Greensburg the last several years. He served with North Hempfield Volunteer Fire Department for many years, and helped start a volunteer fire department at Treasure Lake near DuBois. He and his wife were charter members of Alwine Civic Association. He loved hunting and working outdoors on a large garden in his yard in Greensburg, and cutting firewood for heat at his home in Treasure Lake. He also loved playing softball, both fastpitch and slowpitch, and horseshoes, cards, and Scrabble. Edward was pre-deceased by his parents, Jesse and Alice Shutt; a younger brother, Paul; a son, Bob; and his wife, Mary. He is survived by two sisters, Betty Koontz and Lois Shoaf, and a brother, Lou (Joanne) Shutt; his son, Bill Shutt(Diana); his daughter, Lynn Shutt; his granddaughter Kerri Croushore (with whom he and Mary stayed the last few years) and her husband JT Croushore and their children (his great grandchildren), Zac (Kristi), Jake, Kaci, and Rachel; his grandson Oscar Shutt and his wife Megan; and his granddaughter Daphne Matthews and her husband Taruan Matthews and their son (his great grandson), Damian and a daughter-in-law, Janice Drew. Friends will be received Tuesday 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm in the MASON-GELDER FUNERAL HOME, INC., 201 N. First St., Jeannette. Following CDC Guidelines, face masks must be worn and a limited number of people are permitted in the building at a time. Additional viewing will be held Wednesday 10:00 am until time of service at 11:00 am in Word of Life Church, 4497 PA-136, Greensburg with Pastor Sheldon Moore officiating.
